Legal Counsel

Our client has an exciting opportunity for a Legal Counsel based in Douglas, Isle of Man. This role involves being a business-facing lawyer who will play a crucial part in identifying, managing, and mitigating legal, regulatory, and corporate governance risks. The successful candidate will support various business functions by providing professional, independent, and high-quality legal advice. You will be instrumental in helping the company achieve its strategic and commercial objectives while ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations. The position will involve close supervision and oversight across several legal areas. Notably, the client promotes values of ethics and responsible business conduct. Job Duties:

  • Support the Company Secretariat in organising board and committee meetings, statutory meetings, board reviews, renewals, and Director training.
  • Address and manage potential conflicts between management and legal entity perspectives.
  • Advise on laws and regulations related to non-insurance commercial activities, such as sourcing, data protection, and human resources.
  • Oversee relationships with insurance regulators and support management in developing transparent stakeholder relationships.
  • Maintain an effective corporate governance system, ensuring compliance with laws, regulations, and client principles.
  • Monitor and report on legal trends, anticipating new requirements and preparing appropriate responses in alignment with Compliance.
  • Shape strategy for structuring, negotiating, and resolving local legal issues in corporate transactions to protect client assets.
  • Collaborate with M&A legal teams to manage regulatory requirements for proposed transactions.
  • Guide the business through insurance law and regulations across the value chain, including cross-border operations.
  • Provide input to project performance discussions, coach team members, and offer technical advice.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree (preferred) and post-qualification experience.
  • Qualified Attorney-at-Law, Manx advocate, solicitor, or barrister, preferably with an LL.M or suitable qualification.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in insurance legal and regulatory environments.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Background in corporate functions and transactions legal management.
