Legal Counsel

Our client is currently seeking a full-time Legal Counsel to join their team in Jersey. The Legal Counsel will be a core member of the in-house legal team, providing essential legal advice to the Board and senior management. This role involves collaborating closely with client-facing staff and external advisers regarding legal matters in the day-to-day administration of complex high-value fiduciary structures. Key responsibilities include offering legal advice within the organisation’s trust entity to the boards of companies and the trustees of trusts administered by the entity. The successful candidate will manage legal and technical documentation and prepare instructions to external advisers while acting as a central point of contact for engagements with external legal teams. Additionally, the role supports legal, tax, and regulatory compliance reporting at both the group and local levels. The Legal Counsel will maintain broad knowledge of legal and private client tax matters, ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, and provide internal technical training to staff. This position also involves supporting new business development activities and leading by example by understanding and embodying the organisation’s culture and values.

Job Duties:

  • Provide legal advice to the boards of companies and trustees of trusts administered by the trust entity.
  • Advise on trusts, companies, offshore structures, and risk management related to their creation and administration.
  • Draft and manage legal and technical documentation.
  • Prepare instructions for external advisers and act as a central point of contact for engagement.
  • Support legal, tax, and regulatory compliance reporting including FATCA and CRS.
  • Maintain knowledge of regulatory requirements and legal frameworks in Jersey.
  • Deliver internal technical training in accordance with the organisation’s training plan.
  • Collaborate within the Group Legal Form to support legal projects such as GDPR and tax transparency reporting.
  • Understand and embody the culture and values of the organisation.

Job Requirements:

  • Previous experience in a law firm or trust business.
  • Knowledge of trust and company law, with a sound understanding of fiduciary structures.
  • Familiarity with UK tax law is ideal.
  • Ability to become an expert in new relevant legislation or regulations.
  • Understanding of regulatory codes and guidelines.
  • Strong attention to detail and integrity.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good project management abilities and risk management skills.
  • Strong relationship management, interpersonal, and communication skills.
