Our client is currently seeking a full-time Senior Legal Counsel to join their team in Jersey. This role is integral to the in-house legal team and involves providing comprehensive legal advice to the Board and Senior Management. The successful candidate will work closely with client-facing employees and external advisers on legal matters arising in the administration of complex high-value fiduciary structures. Responsibilities include offering guidance on trust, tax, and company law, as well as supporting Client Administration teams in the technical drafting of trust instruments and contractual agreements. Additionally, the role involves managing and supervising junior Legal Counsel, contributing to business development through external networking, and providing transactional support related to client entity restructuring. The Senior Legal Counsel will ensure compliance with relevant legal, tax, and regulatory frameworks and collaborate on various legal projects within the organization.
Job Duties:
- Provide legal advice in relation to trust, tax, and company law, supporting Client Administration teams.
- Manage and oversee the work of junior Legal Counsel and aid in their personal development.
- Develop wider roles within the business, such as acting as personal director to corporate trustees/directors.
- Contribute to business development by attending external networking events and supporting new business inquiries.
- Offer legal advice within the trust entity to boards of companies and trustees of trusts administered by the organisation.
- Provide transactional support to client-facing teams, particularly in client entity restructuring and acquisitions.
- Prepare instructions for external advisers and coordinate engagement with external legal advisers.
- Support legal, tax, and regulatory compliance reporting at Group level, including FATCA and CRS.
- Maintain a robust understanding of legal and private client tax matters relevant to the client business.
- Collaborate with the Group Legal team on legal projects such as GDPR, tax transparency reporting, and employment law.
Job Requirements:
- Previous experience in private practice or in-house legal within a similar trust business is essential.
- Solid understanding of the Codes, guidelines, and expectations of the regulatory authority.
- Knowledge of trust and company law, with familiarity in UK tax law preferred.
- Ability to swiftly learn and become proficient in new relevant legislation or regulations.
- Strong attention to detail, with exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Demonstrated integrity and discretion in all professional interactions.
- Good project management skills with the ability to identify and manage material risks.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
