Legal Counsel

Our client is seeking a Legal Counsel to join their Legal, Regulatory and Compliance team. This pivotal role involves providing expert legal advice to ensure that the business operates within legal and regulatory frameworks while supporting strategic commercial objectives. The Legal Counsel will adopt a practical and commercial approach to address legal issues, ensuring compliance across various jurisdictions with clear, actionable advice. This role will also focus on enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of in-house legal services. The successful candidate will work collaboratively, supporting different business areas including retail and enterprise sales, technical operations, and executive leadership. This is a full-time position that offers a dynamic working environment where adaptability and responsiveness to change are crucial.

Job Duties:

  • Provide commercial legal advice across multiple jurisdictions to various business sectors, ensuring compliance with domestic and foreign laws and regulations.
  • Build credibility as a trusted advisor, offering practical solutions that align with business goals while managing legal and regulatory risks.
  • Display flexibility in advising on legal matters, including foreign law, and demonstrate an understanding of general legal principles.
  • Draft, review and negotiate a range of legal documents, including agreements, standard terms, statements of work, and legal correspondence.
  • Ensure all documentation aligns with legal and business requirements.
  • Build and manage relationships within the Legal, Regulatory and Compliance team and across the organisation, ensuring alignment in legal advice delivery.
  • Assist with projects such as mergers and acquisitions, large-scale capital expenditure projects, and legal or regulatory consultations by providing legal insights.
  • Collaborate on requests for proposals and customer/supplier onboarding processes.
  • Assist with company secretarial matters in conjunction with relevant external service providers.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of training initiatives to educate staff across departments on legal matters.
  • Continuously improve internal legal processes to enhance the efficiency and timeliness of in-house legal services.

Job Requirements:

  • Qualified lawyer (solicitor, barrister, Fellow of Chartered Institute of Legal Executives or equivalent) with a minimum of 3 years PQE.
  • Experience in a corporate legal environment, providing practical and commercially viable legal advice on corporate and commercial matters, including those governed by foreign laws.
  • Proficient in drafting a variety of legal documents, ensuring accuracy and legal soundness.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of presenting legal information clearly to a range of stakeholders.
  • Ability to quickly grasp legal and business issues, understanding the commercial impact of legal decisions and formulating practical advice balancing legal considerations with business needs.
  • High integrity, discretion, and professionalism in handling confidential matters.
  • Skilled in managing varied workloads, prioritising under pressure, and meeting deadlines without compromising quality.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain effective relationships with colleagues and external parties.
  • An interest in legal technology and its application to in-house services would be advantageous.
