Head of Department, Wills & Probate

Our client is seeking a full-time Head of Department for their Wills & Probate Department in Jersey. This role presents an exciting opportunity to lead one of Jersey’s most established and respected practices in this area. You will manage a diverse caseload primarily involving complex wills drafting and estate planning, and provide expert advice on lasting powers of attorney, estate administration, and other related matters under Jersey law. In addition, you will oversee a team of five legal professionals, including both lawyers and legal assistants. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in fostering client relationships, contributing to the strategic growth of the department, and achieving commercial objectives and key performance indicators (KPIs).

JOB DUTIES:

  • Lead the Wills & Probate Department, managing a varied and complex caseload.
  • Supervise and mentor a team of five, ensuring high-quality work and professional development.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for client relationships, overseeing matters from initial instruction to completion.
  • Develop and implement strategies to foster business growth and enhance the department's profile.
  • Identify new client opportunities and strengthen existing relationships within the client base.
  • Provide expert legal advice in the areas of wills and estates, ensuring compliance with relevant laws.
  • Stay abreast of Jersey procedural rules relating to probate applications and estate matters.
  • Contribute to the department’s commercial objectives and reporting to Partners on progress and performance.
  • Engage in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance departmental efficiency and effectiveness.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Qualified as a Jersey Advocate or Jersey Écrivain with 5 to 10 years of post-qualification experience (PQE).
  • Proven experience in advising clients on Jersey law concerning wills and estates, both for local and expatriate clients.
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency in providing superior legal advice in the field of wills and estates.
  • Strong understanding of Jersey procedural rules related to probate matters.
  • Possess a genuine interest in law and a commitment to delivering exceptional client service.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential for client and team interactions.
  • A strategic mindset with the ability to identify growth opportunities for the department.
  • Proficiency in managing team dynamics and fostering a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to work effectively within a dynamic and changing environment.
