Commercial Underwriter

Our client is seeking a Commercial Underwriter to support the delivery of sustainable, profitable growth by collaborating with the underwriting team on the servicing of new and existing clients. This full-time position will involve the review and evaluation of commercial insurance risks, as well as proposing and negotiating policy terms in line with industry standards, supplier requirements, and regulatory guidelines. The successful candidate will ensure that all actions are aligned with risk appetite and financial objectives. Key responsibilities include analysing risks, processing existing client portfolios, liaising with underwriters for policy coverage, and building strong relationships across the business to enhance client customer service. The role also includes coaching and guiding colleagues on complex risks. This position offers opportunities for personal and professional development within a supportive environment.

Job Duties:

  • Analyse and evaluate commercial insurance risks and propose policy terms aligned with underwriting standards.
  • Service General Insurance products for clients to comply with sales quality standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Review and process existing client portfolios to meet service and underwriting performance targets.
  • Liaise with underwriters to secure appropriate policy cover in a compliant and timely manner.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with colleagues, brokers, and capacity providers.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge and skills to ensure professional and compliant servicing of clients.
  • Deliver short-term projects and activities to agreed standards with the Line Manager.
  • Coach and support colleagues on complex risks and customer service issues.

Job Requirements:

  • Diploma in Insurance (or progression towards) is desirable.
  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) including Maths and English at Grade C or above.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a professional, approachable manner.
  • Experience in delivering client-focused solutions and building lasting relationships.
  • Broad knowledge of the general insurance market.
  • Previous experience in an underwriting role or holding underwriting authority in a relevant sector.
