Facilities Technician

Our client is seeking a Facilities Technician to maintain the safe and efficient operation of their offices, exchanges, and data centres. This is a full-time role, involving 37.5 hours of work per week. The successful candidate will report to the Facilities Manager within the Human Resources department. The role requires ensuring critical areas comply with industry standards, conducting daily inspections, and managing technical issues as they arise. The Facilities Technician will also be involved in maintaining various mechanical and electrical services, ensuring security and alarm systems operate effectively, and participating in an on-call rota for out-of-hours issues. This is a vital role within the organisation, and you will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the operational efficiency of the facilities.

Job Duties:

  • Ensure critical areas are operated and maintained according to industry standards.
  • Carry out daily walk rounds of the Data Centre to ensure compliance with internal policies and SLAs.
  • Escalate any issues via ServiceNow as required and ensure prompt resolution.
  • Carry out hands and eyes requests on behalf of customers as needed.
  • Maintain clarity in critical areas by removing unnecessary equipment and waste, preserving security and fire systems.
  • Responsible for isolating and de-isolating alarms and fire suppression systems.
  • Participate in the on-call rota, addressing out-of-hours technical issues.
  • Communicate any deviations from standard operating procedures to relevant personnel.
  • Ensure all personnel are informed of technical issues and escalate as necessary via ServiceNow.
  • Assist with maintaining mechanical and electrical services.
  • Operate internal security and alarm systems, sharing key knowledge across the department.
  • Provide basic training on access control security systems as requested.
  • Ensure contractors are properly authorised with current permits and security access.
  • Carry out any necessary equipment isolation for issuing permits to work.
  • Maintain the Legionella risk register and schedule testing and remedial actions.
  • Assist in raising business cases for essential projects.
  • Provide project management support for facilities cases and manage PPM planning for audits.
  • Record electrical units consumed to help offset carbon footprint.
  • Understand and comply with regulatory rules, data protection law, and health and safety responsibilities related to the role.
  • Complete appropriate security awareness training related to information security and incident reporting.

Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge of IT systems, rack structures, and tape backup systems.
  • Strong communication skills with various departments.
  • Ability to work independently towards short-term goals.
  • Understanding of data centre strategy and its contributions.
  • Demonstrate a positive and professional approach consistently.
  • Proficiency in business computer systems, particularly Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • A valid driving licence.
  • Ability to participate in the required call-out scheme.
  • Experience in a critical equipment environment (desirable).
  • Familiarity with permit to work and associated systems (desirable).
  • Knowledge of fire, security, and air conditioning systems (desirable).
  • Understanding of financial elements in data centres (desirable).
  • Familiarity with building fabric and mechanical and electrical systems (desirable).
  • Knowledge of automated monitoring and control systems (desirable).
