Full Stack Engineer

Ref: 37362

The Full Stack Engineer is a hands-on developer responsible for building and evolving features across a proprietary technology platform. This role is a lead builder on a significant new programme of platform development and involves working alongside the existing engineering team to extend the platform into new areas. The position is aimed at delivering this programme and will continue as a permanent engineering capability to support the wider roadmap. The successful candidate will work closely with the Head of Engineering, the existing team, and the design partner. The Engineer will translate designs and product requirements into well-tested, maintainable code across the full stack. The role offers a mix of independent feature delivery and collaboration on architecture and standards, ensuring adherence to the established conventions of a mature codebase.

Job Duties:

  • Build and ship full-stack features, from data model and backend logic to user-facing screens.
  • Take ownership of discrete areas of work, delivering independently within agreed architecture and standards.
  • Translate designs into accurate, responsive, and accessible front-end implementations.
  • Break work down into deliverable increments and track progress through the planning process.
  • Develop and maintain backend systems, including RESTful APIs, background jobs, and workflow logic in Ruby on Rails.
  • Design and evolve data models in MySQL, focusing on consistency, performance, and maintainability.
  • Implement robust authorisation and access-control logic, ensuring data segregation and security.
  • Build and consume third-party integrations, including external APIs and CRM systems.
  • Construct front-end applications in React and TypeScript, consuming and extending the design system.
  • Implement data visualisations and interactive analytics views while maintaining usability and visual fidelity.
  • Contribute to reporting and document-generation capabilities by building new report outputs and integrating them into the platform.
  • Write clear, well-tested code, following conventions for test-driven development and automated testing.
  • Participate in code reviews, providing and receiving constructive feedback.
  • Utilise version control practices, contributing to safe and repeatable deployment.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the business and support the controlled adoption of automation and AI-assisted capabilities.
  • Support new features through to launch, responding proactively to user feedback.

Job Requirements:

  • Solid commercial experience with Ruby on Rails, including building and consuming RESTful APIs.
  • Strong proficiency in front-end development using React and TypeScript.
  • Experience with relational databases (MySQL or similar) and data modelling.
  • Familiarity with automated testing and the habit of writing tested code.
  • Comfortable working within an established codebase and respecting existing patterns.
  • Experience integrating third-party APIs, including authentication and error handling.
  • Familiarity with Git, code review, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with Agile delivery and breaking features into incremental work.
  • Exposure to data visualisation libraries or charting libraries is advantageous.
  • Interest in AI and data-driven systems, with the ability to assess their value.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to collaborate with non-technical colleagues and external partners.
