Mobile Packet Core Engineer

Our client is seeking a Mobile Packet Core Engineer to ensure the reliable operation, maintenance, and evolution of the mobile core network. This role encompasses the management of Circuit Switched (CS), Evolved Packet Core (EPC), and IP Multimedia Subsystems (IMS) as well as supporting technologies, including VoLTE and 5G Core. Working in collaboration with various teams, the engineer will act as a subject matter expert for 2G, 4G, and 5G packet core nodes, providing essential technical support. This full-time position requires working 37.5 hours per week. The location is flexible, with options in Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man.

Job Duties:

  • Operate and maintain EPC, IMS, and CS components, ensuring compliance with KPIs and SLAs.
  • Monitor, configure, and apply upgrades and patches for core network elements (MME, SGW, PGW, PCRF, HSS, SBC, CS Core, IMS nodes) in collaboration with Ericsson and internal engineers.
  • Analyse performance metrics to optimise capacity and quality of service.
  • Troubleshoot complex signalling protocol issues (Diameter, SIP, SS7, GTP, HTTPs) and address faults promptly.
  • Manage IP connectivity for GRX and interconnect partners, supporting roaming services and ensuring IREG compliance.
  • Maintain mobile support services such as SMS, antifraud, voicemail, and SIM steering.
  • Support and develop existing VAS SMS, Voice, and Signalling solutions while aiding new products and services.
  • Review and manage upgrades of the Mobile Core Physical, Virtualised, and Containerised infrastructure.
  • Participate in network expansion, capacity planning, and software upgrades while contributing to RFP evaluations and vendor discussions.
  • Collaborate with the Security Architect to assess assets, identify vulnerabilities, and implement security measures.
  • Understand and adhere to relevant regulatory and compliance guidelines, including Data Protection Law and Health and Safety responsibilities.

Job Requirements:

  • Strong understanding of 2G, 4G, and 5G mobile networking and associated core principles.
  • Proficiency with mobile core nodes (MME, SGW, PGW, PCRF, HSS, AMF, UPF, SMF) and IMS components (SBC, S-CSCF, I-CSCF, BGCF, etc.).
  • Knowledge of relevant protocols in a mobile network, including SIP, Diameter, SS7, and HTTPs.
  • Experience with IP networks, routers, switches, firewalls, and dynamic routing protocols.
  • Ability to configure and administer telecoms virtualised environments effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with a collaborative approach.
  • Flexibility to participate in a callout rota and a willingness to learn new technologies.
  • Capability to explore AI and automated tools to support the mobile network and customer issues.
  • Diligent attention to detail with strong multi-tasking and prioritisation skills.
  • Ability to work independently or within a team, maintaining a positive attitude even under pressure.
